Researching

Before a plan can be developed or a writing project undertaken, research needs to be done to get things moving in the right direction. I typically carry out straightforward research for background and compare with other organizations that may have done similar projects. To get solid data from which to benchmark and develop objectives, I strongly recommend formal research and measurement - either through inexpensive online tools or outsourced to a professional or firm that specializes in this. Interviews, focus groups, telephone or online surveys can all provide valuable information to make a client’s initiative much more successful.

Planning

Following a similar template to that of communications award applications, I incorporate the following into a plan: Need, audiences, budget, project team, goals, measurable objectives, key messages, strategies, tactics, timeline, who’s responsible, and evaluation. I recommend at least a brief plan for every initiative and I always create a thorough plan for more involved projects.

Writing & Editing

Writing and editing are major components of my work. Whether writing a plan or creating a wide variety of print and digital communications, I focus on delivering writing that is clear, strategic and engaging. If a client already has a plan in place, I’m available to work on individual writing or editing assignments.

Managing & Coordinating

All projects demand a certain amount of coordinating and liaising with internal or external parties. I bring to a project excellent organization, attention to detail, and strong relationship-building. For initiatives that call for detailed project tracking, I use flexible spreadsheets to track tasks, audiences, actions required, due dates, who’s responsible, and status.

Measuring & Evaluating

Using the measurable objectives in a communications plan, I evaluate a communications program, report results and make recommendations for future initiatives.  Depending on the initiative, I may recommend formal measurement – either through inexpensive online tools or outsourced to a professional or firm that specializes in this. As with the front end of an initiative, interviews, focus groups, telephone or online surveys can all provide valuable information to measure a project’s success in a meaningful and tangible way.
